The origins of Labour Day date back to the late 19th century, when the trade union and labour movements were growing in the US.
Labour Day is being observed today with the renewed pledge to acknowledge and promote the dignity of labourers. OR became the first state to recognize Labor Day as an official public holiday in 1887. On May 1, 1886, the working class in the USA challenged their 16-hour workday as it was unsafe and fatal and demanded that workers should not be asked to work for more than 8 hours a day. However, in Northern Europe, Walpurgis Night is celebrated on a preceding night and this holiday merges with the Labour Day in some countries. In 1992, the location was designated as a landmark for Chicago. It has tried and included everything that showcases works done by labourers.
While the day has different story for different countries, the main reason for Labour Day is unfair treatment of the labour class. In India, Labour Day is known by the name Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or Kamgar Din.The first Labour Day or May Day was celebrated in India in the year 1923.
Nepal has marked the celebration of the Day with the Workers Movement (Majdoor Andolan) held at Biratnagar in 2007 BS, some 68 years ago.
Meanwhile, thousands of other people were participating in officially-allowed May 1 events in the Istanbul district of Maltepe at a vast meeting area, with similar gatherings formed across the country, including the capital Ankara and Turkey's third largest city of Izmir. "This will ensure greater productivity, opportunities to learn, grow and gradual transition into the formal sector for increased real income". Since 2014, the overall allocation for the Labour and Employment Ministry has seen an upward trend.
The untiring efforts and contributions of the labour need to be recognized and applauded. "It gives us a chance to show gratitude for workers' grit, dedication, ingenuity and strength, which define our nation's character".
