In an age when leaks spoil every surprise, Facebook came very close to surprising everyone with the launch of its highly anticipated Oculus Go stand-alone VR headset.

A 32GB version will cost $199 and a 64GB retails for $249. At its F8 developers conference today (May 1), the company released a new VR headset called the Oculus Go. Battery life is set around 2 hours for playing games, and about 2.5 hours when you're streaming media and video content. And with no need to drop in a phone or power up a PC, it's never been easier to share VR with friends.

Pre-orders of the $200 Oculus Go virtual reality headset were snapped up by eager buyers in the middle of last night, resulting in the device selling out in a matter of hours, according to a Digital Trends report. The headset's design echoes that and the experience once you jump in.

Despite Silicon Valley's push into VR, the technology hasn't been widely adopted by consumers.

The company has long maintained that bringing your hands into VR is more important than getting your head there.

"This is how people imagine VR should work", said Muthukumar. You can still attach some headphones to the Go via a 3.5mm jack, but in most of my early testing I've been fine just using the integrated audio.

Amazon actually put up the listing a bit ahead of schedule, offering pre-orders well ahead of the official announcement, all of which promptly sold out - then Amazon removed the pre-order button entirely having realized its mistake.

Starting today, you can now order the Oculus Go from the Oculus website. All of the necessary hardware is in the headset itself.
