Binghamton University: First-year student killed in stabbing Sunday night

Earlier Monday evening, District Attorney Steve Cornwell confirmed Roque was in custody after a day of extensive searches across Binghamton University's campus.

He and Mr. Faughnan said researchers believed that the attacker experienced targeted Mr. Souza deliberately, but wouldn't clarify what had contributed them to that decision.

According to the University, a 19-year-old male student was stabbed on campus around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

A college freshman was stabbed to death on his State University of NY campus Sunday night in what officials said was a targeted attack.


"We feel incredible pain and sorrow, we can't even imagine their despair", said Brian Rose, vice president of Student Affairs, during a Monday news conference.

The campus plans to resume classes on Tuesday.

Investigators have not disclosed circumstances surrounding Sunday's stabbing, which marks the second homicide involving a BU student this year and the fourth homicide to occur in Broome County for 2018.

Searchers are being aided in wooded areas by state forest rangers.


According to BU officials, Souza is an global student from Brazil, but the New York Post reports that Souza graduated from high school previous year in the Westchester County Village of Rye Brook.

According to a tweet from the university, Michael M. Roque, 20, a Binghamton University student, was charged with second degree murder.

In December 2009, Richard T. Antoun, an emeritus professor of anthropology, was stabbed to death on campus by a graduate student.
