Philadelphia 76ers' Joel Embiid needs surgery for facial fracture

Per ESPN's Zach Lowe, depending on how the surgery turns out, Embiid could return to Philadelphia's lineup in two to four weeks.

The Sixers confirmed Thursday that Embiid has a concussion and an orbital fracture of his left eye. Embiid finished with just five points and three rebounds during the eight minutes he was part of the game.

Fultz was driving toward the basket 20 seconds into the period when he appeared to accidentally head-butt Embiid.

The seven-footer left the game with the help of some trainers and didn't return.

Embiid was taken off the court and went through concussion protocol, and while results were negative, he was ruled out for the remainder of the game with a facial contusion.

"Immediately following the injury, Embiid was assessed for a concussion, was asymptomatic at that time, and passed the NBA's locker room concussion assessment tool", the 76ers said in a statement.

After a career start that saw him relegated to the sidelines with various injuries more often than not, it had appeared the injury bug had finally made a decision to leave Embiid alone this season as he has appeared in 63 of Philadelphia's 74 games this season.

"My heart dropped", Fultz said Wednesday of his collision with Embiid. "I'm anxious about him, but I believe he's OK". "He's a tough guy".

But that's just the tip of the bad news iceberg for 76ers fans.

Embiid was released from the hospital Thursday but will not travel with the team to Atlanta for Friday's game against the Hawks, the Sixers said. After the game, Fultz sent out prayers for his recovering teammate. The Sixers (44-30) now own the fourth best record in the Eastern Conference and are likely to face the Indiana Pacers (45-31) in the first-round of the 2018 NBA Playoffs which get underway on April 14.

The Indiana Pacers are lurking a half-game back of the 76ers.
