Florida State as outshot 46.9%-43.6% but managed six more looks and went 19-22 at the charity stripe where Xavier was only 19-31 which was costly. The celebrations were insane in all of these upsets, but in Florida State's case, the Seminoles started a little too early.

Junior guard Cierra Dillard had 22 points, seven rebounds and three steals and 11th-seeded Buffalo reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history with a convincing 86-65 victory over third-seeded Florida State on Monday in second-round NCAA Tournament Albany Region play at Tallahassee, Fla. Games including the Seminoles have typically finished over the total (58.1 percent).

Even in a two-possession game, a technical foul would have given the Musketeers hope. By the time 17,552 spectators got done witnessing two games in various configurations, a No. 2 seed and a No. 1 seed had held second-half leads totaling 34 points yet had gone banished.

Florida State faced Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and was it a nail biter.

The Seminoles will take on Gonzaga in the Sweet 16 in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Hamilton said after his ninth-seeded Seminoles upset top-seeded Xavier that recruiting rankings and seeds matter less and less as talent spreads out across the country. One year ago in the very same round and region, 11-seed Xavier would rout the Seminoles (91-66). Gonzaga led by 11 at the half but trailed 67-62 with 6:02 to play before a 16-2 run gave them a nine point lead with 1:52 to go.

Reid and Oursler connected on jumpers to open the fourth quarter as Buffalo's lead grew to 18. Mfiondu Kabengele scored his second consecutive bucket, tying it up at 68 with 2:32 to go. The Seminoles rank 208th in three pointers allowed per game (23.0).

The Seminoles committed an offensive foul, but the Musketeers' offense sputtered to a near-turnover and then an actual turnover, leading to a blast up the court that left Florida State's PJ Savoy preparing to shoot a three-pointer from the right side. Junior guard Terance Mann and senior forward Phil Cofer added 10 points apiece.

The Sweet 16 field is set after a roller coaster ride of an opening weekend in the NCAA Tournament. On its next one after that, which began with 21 seconds left and a three-point deficit, Kerem Kanter's attempt at a three-point shot from the top seemed to graze the front of the net. And as with that game, the upstart dispatched the favorite with surprising ease.

With the loss, FSU fails to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in four years.

The top scorer for the Bulldogs this season has been Johnathan Williams.

The Chippewas had won their first tournament game ever in Saturday's first-round upset of No. 6 Louisiana State.
