Man dead after shooting at White House

The incident affected pedestrian and vehicular traffic around the White House, the Secret Service said earlier on Twitter.

The man who shot himself in front of the White House on Saturday in a large crowd was dead, nut not yet identified.

U.S. Secret Service tweeted that there were no other injuries aside from the male victim, who "allegedly suffered a self-inflicted gun shot wound".

The White House was placed on lockdown and the surrounding area cordoned off by emergency personnel Saturday after an apparent gunshot was heard.

Medical personnel were called to respond to the male victim, but he was declared dead at the scene, the U.S. Secret Service said.

The name of the man has yet to be released to the public as authorities are scouring for his relatives.

The DC Police Department earlier said in a tweet: "Our natural death squad is on the scene".

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, at the time and are scheduled to return to Washington on Saturday afternoon for the annual Gridiron Club Dinner.

DRAMATIC scenes have unfolded at the White House today after a US Secret Service agent reported that shots had been fired.

Disturbances outside the White House are not rare.
