The student shot himself in the men's restroom of Jackson Memorial Middle School in Massillon at around 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, prompting school officials to place the school on lockdown. The district approved a school zone change to help balance high school sizes and middle school closings.
The boy was rushed to a local hospital with a wound to his temple, but information on his condition is not yet available.
"We believe what we have found to be just some distractionary-type devices, but nothing anything that would be explosive that would have done harm to others", Brink said. It's unclear at this time whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.
No other students were hurt in the shooting at Jackson Middle School, near Massillon.
The child said that he would "shoot up the school before the end of the school year", according to school officials, who added that the school was not in any imminent danger. Students were released to their parents following the incident.
Superintendent Christopher DiLoreto said the school is still considering if classes will continue Wednesday. Police have not determined how the student retrieved the.22 caliber gun.
Also, the district is taking into consideration students who want to remain at their current schools.
