Neighbors said they were alarmed when they heard gunshots ring out Friday, only to find out later that an officer had been killed and two other deputies were injured when a suspect opened fire while a warrant was being served.

Locust Grove Elementary School, which was nearby, was put on lockdown during the response to the incident.

The officers' conditions were not immediately known.

A Georgia mayor says a police officer who was killed in a shooting that wounded two sheriff's deputies had a young child and a baby on the way.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman Nelly Miles said she did not yet have details about the shooting.

The exact location of the shooting is disputed at this time, but it was in the city of Locust Grove near the Tanger Outlets.

"The other sheriff's deputy is in fair condition at Atlanta Medical", McBrayer said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation late Friday said that Henry County deputies Michael D. Corley and Ralph Sidwell "Sid" Callaway were wounded in the gunfire.

"We just can't believe this happened", he said. When he wouldn't cooperate, they called the Locust Grove officer for backup, McBrayer said.

While attempting to arrest the man, an altercation broke out and all four men were shot.

The two Henry County deputies were veterans, McBrayer said.

Two of the officers were taken from the scene to a hospital by helicopter, while the third was taken to a hospital by ambulance.
