The town of Italy has a population of about 2,000 and only one high school.

"We hope that things like this never happen in a community; unfortunately, we have to prepare as a school district", he said.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office earlier posted message on its Facebook page, saying that "shooter is in custody", and that students were being moved as they continued the investigation. Nearby Stafford Elementary School was also on lockdown as staff prepared to release students once police gave the all-clear, WFAA reported.

Authorities don't know if a 16-year-old Texas boy arrested in a high school shooting knows the 15-year-old girl who was airlifted to a hospital after the attack. Neither knows the girl's condition. He said he could not share the shooting suspect's disciplinary history at the school.

He added that counselors will be provided on campus to speak with students.

Joffre says the district is working to reunite parents with their children. Suspect in custody. More information to come. Unconfirmed reports on United States media said one person had been injured and was being transferred to hospital.

Italy, which calls itself "The Biggest Little Town in Texas", is located off Interstate 35E, near U.S. Highway 77 and State Highway 34, about 15 miles south of Waxahachie.

No injuries have been confirmed in the shooting.
