In another nod to the original, there are chrome accents around the grille and front windows, classic torque-thrust 19-inch aluminum wheels, red Brembo brakes, and a unique black-front grille.

This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool. Finished in the same Dark Highland Green, it is also devoid of spoilers or badging.

Debuting at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt pays homage to that original vehicle more faithfully than any other recreation before it. Two 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks were used in the film. The other auto, used in numerous jumps during the famous chase scene, went to a salvage yard.

Inside, the leather-trimmed interior features unique green accent stitching on the dashboard, door panels, center console and seats.

It was unveiled at the North American International Automobile Show (NAIAS) by Steve McQueen's granddaughter, Molly, who also starred in a film to show off the new special edition - fighting against a Dodge Charger for the final parking space in a vehicle park, mirroring the iconic chase in Bullitt.

But it's under the bonnet where the latest Ford Mustang Bullitt gets interesting. The special-edition S550 facelift, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Bullitt, will make its way into showrooms later in the year.

The third generation of Ford Mustang Bullitt is ready to take the wheel, revealing new looks and new specs.

It is one of the most famous cars in cinema history, up there with Michael Caine's Mini Cooper from The Italian Job and Michael J Fox's DeLorean from Back to the Future. The latter, used in numerous jump scenes, was recovered in early 2017, the other was inherited by Sean Kiernan from his late father, Robert, in 2014, and he contacted Ford. "It just kind happened with life".

Steve McQueen's legendary auto chase in the 1968 "Bullitt'" thriller forever engraved in our minds the Mustang GT as an iconic vehicle, one in which you can chase bad guys without breaking a sweat.

Every motor show features new cars restricted to certain markets, but the USA has more than most.

Ford is also offering three options for those who want more; Recaro leather sports seats, magnetic suspension and an upgraded electronics package with sat nav, a higher-grade audio system and additional safety functions like blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.
