"I'd also like to thank President Trump and the United States government for the help that they provided as well", LiAngelo Ball said.

Ball's son LiAngelo and two of his teammates, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley, were arrested November 8 after stealing designer sunglasses in Shanghai, according to the New York Times. (Particularly when said citizens are high profile and/or Big Ballers.) He spoke to Xi Jinping, president of the People's Republic of China, and the players were then released.

Freshman LiAngelo Ball was detained along with Jalen Hill and Cody Riley almost two weeks ago and returned last week after Trump said he had a long conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the incident.

Trump's tweet Sunday comes after the father of player LiAngelo Ball minimized Trump's involvement in winning the players' release in comments to ESPN.

"Everybody wants to make it seem like [Trump] helped me out", the elder Ball told ESPN on Friday. The players missed the team's game with Georgia Tech in Shanghai and were forced to remain behind in China to deal with the fallout of the charges even after the rest of the team returned to Los Angeles.

Hill, Riley and Ball had been required to stay at their hotel in Hangzhou after being questioned about a shoplifting incident.

LaVar Ball told ESPN that while he was pleased with how the situation in China was handled, he feels like it was overblown.

All three players have been suspended from the UCLA basketball team indefinitely. "I've learned my lesson from this big mistake, and I'm a hundred percent sure I'll never make a mistake like this again". I'm from L.A. I've seen a lot worse things happen than a guy taking some glasses. My son has built up enough character that one bad decision doesn't define him.

"They will have to earn their way back", Alford said. "That's not me. I handle what's going on and then we go from there".
