Ashish Nehra has also been named in the the 16-man squad for the first T20, which will also be his final worldwide match.
The All-India Senior Selection Committee met in Mumbai today to pick the squad for the series starting November 1 in New Delhi, and from the pool of players selected to play Australia earlier this month, only one was dropped - batsman Kedar Jadhav. However, whether Nehra will be included in the playing XI completely depends on the team management. "We will monitor Kohli's workload after the Tests (vs Sri Lanka)", said chief selector MSK Prasad.
"Shreyas has been prolific in all forms of the game, be it a four-day format, be it one-day or T20, be it IPL, he has been performing".
Prasad continued: "We can't say that [if he will surely play in the Delhi T20I]".
The two sides are now playing three-match ODI series, with the visiting side leading the series by 1-0 following a seven-wicket win in Mumbai on Sunday.
Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who was recalled during the New Zealand ODI series, has been retained for the T20I series as well. "With Siraj, he is doing well and has been duly rewarded", Prasad added. The Test squad has three specialist spinners in R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. The three T20Is with New Zealand will be played in Delhi on November 1, Rakjot on November 4 and Thiruvananthapuram on November 7.
Iyer made his Mumbai debut in 2014-15, and despite a jittery start in the middle order, he was promoted to the top where he went on to finish as the side's highest run-getter with 809 runs to his name at an average of 50.56.
