If the BJP manages win all three Rajya Sabha seats, it will be a shot in the arm for the ruling party in Gujarat ahead of this year's assembly election, party leaders said.

Gandhinagar: BJP national president Amit Shah, Union textiles minister Smriti Irani and Congress defector Balwantsinh Rajput on Friday filed their nominations for elections to the three Gujarat Rajya Sabha seats. She filled her nomination after Amit Shah.

Amit Shah has been an MLA from Naranpura constituency in Ahmedabad. Irani and Dilipbhai Pandya (both BJP) and Ahmed Patel - is ending on August 18. Union Minister Smriti Irani, now a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat, has been re-nominated for the other seat.

The announcement came after BJP Parliamentary Board met here to take stock of the Bihar situation following Nitish Kumar's resignation as the State Chief Minister. This has given new speculations that BJP might field a third candidate from the state and if that happens, the veteran Congress leader, Ahmed Patel might have to face tough competition. The elections will be held on August 8. The BJP has 121 MLAs in the 182-member Assembly while the Congress 57 members.

With Venkaiah Naidu being fielded as vice-presidential nominee, Manohar Parrikar moving to Goa as State Chief Minister and Anil Madhav Dave's untimely passing away, the Union Cabinet may require "more experienced hands and talent", sources said. The names also include Sitaram Yechury, CPM general secretary and Derek O'Brien of Trinamool COngress.
