Veterans Day, on the other hand, was originally called Armistice Day, which commemorated the end of fighting in World War I - you may have heard before that it happened on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918.

The day was also referred to as Memorial Day starting in the 1880s, but it officially remained Decoration Day until it was renamed by federal law. "We will always remember the sacrifice our veterans made for us", Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin said.

Later in the morning, against the backdrop of downtown's All Wars Memorial, another throng of veterans gathered to observe the solemn holiday. Under each of these crosses lies a loved one, a hero - someone who sacrificed for each of us.

Post 12 American Legion members stood at attention with the rest of the crowd as "God Bless America" was sang by Lacie Carpenter and Kelsey Pate before the retiring of the colors and the close of the ceremony.
